Eliminate Weak Passwords

Updated: Feb 3

Are You Leaving A Digital Key Under The Doormat?

There was a time when leaving a spare key under the doormat felt perfectly reasonable.

Quick access. Just in case. No big deal.

Of course, everyone also knew that was the first place someone would look.

Fast forward to today, and many of us have stopped doing that with our homes……but we’re still doing it digitally.

Eliminate Weak Passwords

The Modern Digital Doormat

Digital “spare keys” are everywhere. They just look a little different now.

Things like:

  • Reusing the same password everywhere

  • Sharing logins via email or text

  • Skipping updates because “I’ll do it later”

  • Leaving old accounts active “just in case”

  • Clicking “remember me” on every device

None of these feel reckless in the moment. They feel convenient. Familiar. Harmless.

Just like that key under the mat.

Convenience vs. Awareness

The tricky part about digital security is that it rarely feels risky, until it is.

Unlike a physical break-in, digital access often:

  • Happens quietly

  • Goes unnoticed for weeks or months

  • Leaves no obvious signs

  • Affects multiple accounts at once

And because digital “keys” can be copied endlessly, once access is exposed, it’s very hard to put back.

It’s Not About Paranoia

This isn’t about locking everything down or living in constant fear. It’s about awareness.

Most people don’t leave a key outside anymore, not because they’re anxious, but because they’ve learned better habits.

Digital security works the same way:

  • Thoughtful access beats blind convenience

  • Simple safeguards go a long way

  • Small changes reduce big risks

A Quick Self-Check

If someone needed access to your digital life tomorrow, how easy would you make it?

If the answer is “very,” you might be leaving a few digital keys under the mat without realizing it.

A Modern Upgrade

Just like homes evolved from spare keys to smart locks, alarms, and better habits, digital security has evolved too.

The goal isn’t to make life harder, it’s to make it safer without getting in the way.

A little awareness now can prevent a lot of cleanup later.

Sometimes the biggest risks aren’t the obvious ones, they’re the habits that stuck around a little longer than they should have.

Worth thinking about.
