Spilled Something on Your Keyboard?

Updated: Feb 19

Here’s What to Do (And What Not to Do)

It happens fast.

One second you’re answering emails. The next second your coffee, water, soda, or worse - is soaking into your keyboard.

Keyboard spills are one of the most common accidents we see. And the first few minutes matter more than you think.

Before you panic, here’s what to do.

Step 1: Power It Down Immediately

If it’s a laptop:

  • Unplug the charger

  • Hold the power button down and shut it off

  • Disconnect any external devices

If possible, remove the battery (on older models).

The goal is simple: Stop electricity from flowing through wet components.

Electricity + liquid = permanent damage.

Step 2: Flip It and Let It Drain

Turn the laptop upside down in a tent position (like an upside-down “V”).

This helps liquid drain away from the motherboard instead of deeper into it.

Do not:

  • Shake it aggressively

  • Keep pressing keys

  • Try to “see if it still works”

That curiosity test is often what causes the real damage.

Step 3: Don’t Use a Hair Dryer

This is a big one.

Heat can:

  • Warp components

  • Push liquid deeper inside

  • Create condensation

Air movement is fine. Direct heat is not.

Step 4: Know What Was Spilled

Water is the least damaging. Coffee, soda, juice, and anything sugary or acidic are much more serious.

Sticky residue can:

  • Corrode internal components

  • Damage key switches

  • Cause delayed failure days later

Even if it seems fine after drying, corrosion can quietly spread.

Step 5: Get It Professionally Evaluated

Here’s the part most people skip.

Even if your keyboard appears to work after drying, liquid may still be inside.

A professional inspection can:

  • Open and properly dry internal components

  • Clean corrosion

  • Replace damaged keyboards

  • Test the motherboard

  • Recover data if needed

Waiting “to see what happens” often turns a simple repair into a costly replacement.

When Is It Too Late?

If your laptop:

  • Won’t power on

  • Has flickering screens

  • Shows random shutdowns

  • Has sticky or unresponsive keys

It’s time to stop troubleshooting at home. The sooner it’s evaluated, the better the chances of recovery.
